However you get your news, here are a few stories that stood out in local, state, federal and international news.
The 54 year old musician worth around $400 million was arrested last Monday in Manhattan, NY.
“In March, federal agents raided Combs’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Fla., stopping him at a Miami-area airport and confiscating his electronic devices. The authorities made no announcements at the time, but a federal official said the inquiry was at least in part a human trafficking investigation. Federal prosecutors in New York had by that time interviewed a number of witnesses about sexual misconduct allegations against Combs.”
“In the indictment, prosecutors allege that since 2008 Combs has been part of a criminal organization that engaged in or attempted to engage in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, obstruction of justice and other offenses.”
Combs was “ordered held without bail Tuesday after he was charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs pleaded not guilty to the charges in federal court in New York City.”
“Prosecutors sought detention for Combs, arguing that he ‘poses an ongoing and significant danger to the community, has repeatedly engaged in obstructive conduct, and presents a serious risk of flight,’ while his lawyers asked that he be released on bond.”
“Hezbollah confirmed its head of military operations, Ibrahim Aqil, was killed on Friday in an Israeli airstrike on a southern Beirut neighborhood. Lebanon's health ministry said at least 12 people were killed and dozens more were wounded.”
This airstrike comes after Israel defense officials planted explosives in pagers and walkie-talkies used by members of Hezbollah, killing and wounding dozens of Hezbollah members, as well as civilians.
“President Biden said at the top of the cabinet meeting on Friday that the administration is working on a solution that would allow civilians in northern Israel and southern Lebanon to go back to their homes,” but acknowledged, ‘we still have a way to go.’”
‘"This was a failure on the part of the United States Secret Service," stated Ronald Rowe, the acting director of the Secret Service in a press conference last week addressing the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump this past July.
“The Secret Service did not give clear guidance or direction to its local law enforcement partners, there were failures in the advance work by the agency, there were "communication deficiencies" between law enforcement personnel at the site, and an overreliance on mobile devices that resulted in information being siloed.”
"While some members of the advance team were very diligent, there was complacency on the part of others that led to a breach of security protocols," he said.
“Earlier that day, the House of Representatives voted unanimously (405-0) to approve legislation that would require the Secret Service to provide equal protection to major presidential and vice presidential nominees as it does for the sitting president and vice president… in the wake of the two assassination attempts.”
Springfield, OH received an unnecessary and inaccurate spotlight last week when Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump and Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance were among high-profile figures spreading lies about Haitian migrants.
The lies have been addressed and deemed baseless by members of Springfield city government and Ohio’s state government.
Bomb threats and other threats of violence over these lies have caused the state of Ohio to use resources to protect people in Springfield.
“Dozens of members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be stationed in city schools starting [last] Tuesday following a series of threats across the city, sweeping each building every morning before the arrival of faculty or students. Security cameras have also been stationed at strategic spots in the city, and a bomb-sniffing dog will be in the city and available round-the-clock.”
Words, especially from the mouths of the powerful, carry weight, even when there is no basis in fact. We deserve leaders, not lying fear mongers.
As The Weather Gets Colder, Baseball Heats Up
For the 12th time, the Cleveland Guardians have clinched the American League Central Division and are heading to the playoffs.
The Guardians have not won the World Series since 1948, the longest active drought in the MLB.
In other baseball news, last Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodger’s Shohei Ohtani went 6-for-6 with 3 Home Runs, 10 RBI’s and his 51st stolen base of the season in a 20-4 rout against the Miami Marlins. Ohtani became the only baseball player ever to have 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season.
The win also clinched a postseason appearance for the Dodgers, which will be the first time Ohtani plays playoff major league baseball.
